All pipe couplings (MT) are classified into two groups. Consider them:
- simple connecting;
- transient.

- water communications (hot and cold);

- shafts, as well as various nodal elements in mechanics;
- power cables.

Pipe-to-pipe couplings
Products related to couplings are used for joining monolithic pipelines, as well as communications, which can be dismantled if necessary. For mounting threaded structures, respectively, threaded connecting fittings are used. For monolithic communications, devices are used that are joined to the pipes by welding or special glue. A very important rule is that the coupling connecting pipe-pipe must match the material with the pipes in the structure.
Two types of couplings are used to connect individual elements of steel communication:
- threaded;
- compression.
Connection by means of a threaded part is quite simple: two pipes are screwed into the connecting part due to their thread, as a result of which a reliable threaded joint is formed. The steel pipe-pipe coupling is characterized by increased strength characteristics. In some cases, for steel communications use fittings made of stainless steel. The stainless steel has good resistance to corrosion.
Couplings can be threaded or have compression connection
To achieve maximum tightness in communications, couplings are used that are equipped with special union nuts. Such connecting products are called compression and, in addition to nuts, include o-rings. The assembly and disassembly of pipe-to-pipe compression products is fast and easy, however, care must be taken not to damage the nuts. Of the minuses of such a connection is that it is less reliable than threaded.
Combined Products
The combined pipe-pipe coupling has become widespread when laying mixed communications. Such products join pipes made of modern polymeric materials with steel pipes or valves. Consider the types of combined couplings:
- with internal thread;
- with external thread;
- detachable with mixed thread (American).
Devices equipped with internal thread are used in communications that transport potable water, as well as in structures transporting industrial water at enterprises of various kinds. In addition, such couplings are used in the installation of heating systems.
Compression couplings allow quick connection of pipes
There is one important parameter - the thread pitch. This parameter, as a rule, corresponds to the standard prescribed in the necessary documentation, which eliminates possible problems with thread compatibility. The outer surface of the product is ribbed, which allows you to securely fix the fitting with a tool during installation.
External thread products have a wide range of sizes and are used everywhere. The external thread allows a reliable connection in the pipe structure.
A mixed thread detachable fixture is used both in metal piping and in plastic. Such a pipe coupling is able to dock and disconnect the elements of the pipeline structure and is characterized by high versatility, as well as ease of installation and dismantling. Such devices are used for units that, if necessary, must be disconnected from the main communication (for example, for pumping equipment).
Repair clutch
Products that are used for operational repair of communications are mainly made of cast iron. Such devices are called convoluted and with the help of them you can eliminate the following types of damage:
- fistulas;
- cracks;
- splits in communications with section indicators from 80 to 300 mm.
Special types of couplings are used to repair various types of pipelines.
Such products can be used even in adverse weather conditions, which is very convenient. Repair with convoluted connecting elements is carried out both on the surface and underground and does not require special equipment.
Varieties of compounds
There are several types of connections that are made using such a connecting element as a pipe coupling. The drain pipe coupling is used for the operational installation of various drain installations mainly in the oil and gas industry. The most popular cross-sectional indicator of such a coupling is 80 mm. An eighty millimeter aluminum drain is produced, which has excellent resistance to oil environments. Such a device has a threaded connection, which is marked G3-A. Docking to the drain is carried out due to a special pipe.
Another popular connection is the Gebo Dock Pipe Coupler. Such a product is used in situations where the possibility of organizing a threaded joint is excluded.

The nuances of installing couplings
Gebo threaded fixtures are quite easy to install, however, before starting the installation, it is imperative to do the laborious work of threading the pipe. After cutting, it is necessary to combine the obtained thread with the fitting of the product and screw it.
The most convenient to install are Gebo compression models. In such cases, the installation process looks like this:
- Pipes are prepared for the installation of a compression sleeve, cleaning and calibrating them.
- Further, the installation of sealing elements and crimping nuts on the pipes.
- At the third stage, the nuts are tightened until the desired connection is obtained.
There are special press fittings, the installation of which is also a simple undertaking. The pipe is inserted into the fitting until it stops and pressed against the fitting, after which the crimping ring is crimped.
