In the modern building materials market, you can see both new and traditional products. For example, asbestos-cement pressureless pipes in construction have been used for a long time, but, nevertheless, still find very wide application. They are used not only for laying networks of external pipelines, but also for creating irrigation and ventilation systems. Not the last role such products play in the construction of casing pipes of wells.

GOST asbestos-cement pipes

Asbestos cement pipes have been used for many decades in various fields of construction

Types of pipes made of asbestos cement

Asbestos cement is based on dispersed reinforced concrete. Moreover, asbestos performs in this composition the function of reinforcement, evenly distributed throughout the product. And hardening cement forms a dense matrix, in the cells of which asbestos particles are present. The proportions of the components in the final product are as follows:

  • cement mortar - 85%;
  • asbestos - 15%.

On sale today you can find two types of products of this type.

Pressure pipes. They are made according to the requirements of GOST 539-80. Designed for operation under high pressure (ranging from 6 to 9 atmospheres). They are used, as a rule, for the construction of pressure head sewerage networks, water supply systems, heating mains. In addition, similar pipe products are used to create ventilation systems and drainage collectors.

GOST asbestos-cement pipes

Pressure pipes are used to create networks where the movement of the working medium is carried out under pressure

Asbestos-cement pressureless pipes. Their production is regulated by the requirements of GOST 1839-80. Used in the construction of pressure-free pipelines for ventilation, gas supply, sewage. Also, from asbestos-cement pipes GOST 1839-80, casings are created for laying electric cables, supports of building envelopes, garbage chutes, etc.

Advantages and disadvantages

A fairly wide range of applications of pressure and pressureless asbestos-cement pipes is due to the presence of a number of advantages in these products.

  • simplicity of processing and simple installation;
  • non-susceptibility to corrosion and to the effects of many chemically active aggressive environments;
  • high level of thermal insulation;
  • less weight than metal products;
  • when creating external pipelines, there is no need to organize protection against groundwater;
  • the presence of a smooth inner surface reduces the likelihood of clogging;
  • affordable price. Asbestos-cement pipes will cost the consumer less than plastic and metal products.

Important! Manufacturers declare, and practice confirms the correctness of their words that the service life of such pipes is much longer than that of metal pipe - up to 40 or more years without the need for repair.

Of the shortcomings, home craftsmen allocate a significant weight of asbestos-cement products. During installation, it will be very difficult to do without lifting equipment. In addition, their disadvantages include low acid resistance and fragility.

GOST asbestos-cement pipes

The strength of the pipes made of asbestos cement allows them to be laid in the ground without any pressure protection.

Requirements for non-pressure asbestos-cement pipes GOST 1839-80

Pipes of this type are used for transporting various liquid working fluids through gravity flow networks.Their diameter is in the range of mm, and the wall thickness is mm. Such dimensions, combined with the increased strength characteristics of the GOST 1839-80 asbestos-cement pipe, for example, the BNT 150 grade, make it possible to use it for the construction of a bored pile foundation. It is mounted in a pre-prepared well, after which it is filled with concrete mortar. The design thus created is able to withstand significant loads.

For asbestos-cement non-pressure pipes, GOST 1839-80 makes the following requirements:

  • all products must pass a hydraulic test of 4-6 atmospheres. The specific value of this parameter is selected depending on the class of the pipe;
  • all products are subject to mandatory verification of resistance to longitudinal compression. The level of applied pressure is determined by the diameter of the pipe;
  • the material must have a homogeneous structure, the presence of chips, cracks or delamination is not allowed;
  • the geometric dimensions of the final product must clearly correspond to the numbers indicated in the passport documentation.

Given that these products are designed to work on gravity highways, these requirements look rather stringent. However, by purchasing pipes that have a certificate of compliance with GOST 1839-80, you will be sure of their high quality.

During installation, in addition to special asbestos-cement couplings to pressureless pipelines, for connecting the pipeline elements, cast-iron or polymer fittings can be used.

The above areas of application of these products can be supplemented by the following:

  • gutters are created from the BNT 100 pipes sawn along the axis;
  • use as elements of improvement: decorative fragments of fences, columns, pillars, flowerpots, flower beds, etc .;
  • chimneys. Their construction from asbestos-cement pipes is permitted by SNiP 41-01 of 2003 in force in our country.

Important! However, this regulatory document says that such use is allowed only if the gas temperature does not exceed 3000 ° C.

GOST asbestos-cement pipes

The diameter of the pipes, their weight and other parameters are regulated by GOST

GOST 1839-80 contains numerical values of the diameters of asbestos-cement pressureless pipes and their weight. These data are presented in table No. 1.

Features of chrysotile cement products

This item deserves a separate discussion. Asbestos dust is considered harmful to human health, therefore, the installation of asbestos-cement pipes is necessary in respiratory tract protection. But a few decades ago, a chrysotile cement pipe was developed. Thanks to this invention, the above problem has been solved.

GOST asbestos-cement pipes

Chrysotile cement pipes - a more modern version of asbestos-cement products, they are safe for human health

In fact, chrysotile itself is among the varieties of asbestos. But unlike the so-called amphibole, it is practically harmless. During production and during installation of pipelines, a lot of dust is always produced. According to scientists, amphibole-based material is a powerful carcinogen that can cause a number of serious diseases. And even a small amount that has got into the body is excreted very poorly. Especially a lot of dust appears when cutting pipes. But without this procedure, no pipeline is possible to build! That is why chrysotile products are currently being produced. You won’t buy amphibole pipes today, because they have been discontinued.

The numerical additive present in the labeling of chrysotile products is an indicator of the property. Consider from this point of view, for example, a chrysotile cement pipe brand BNT-100.This product is used in pipelines that will be subject to light loads. The wall thickness of this type of pipe is 9 millimeters. If you want to purchase universal chrysotile cement (read, asbestos cement) pipe products GOST 1839-80, stop your choice on products BNT-150 and above. In industry, systems of any scale are created on their basis.

In conclusion, a few words about the installation of asbestos-cement pipes. You can do it yourself. The quality of the work performed will always be almost ideal, since the material is very unpretentious. Pipes can be cut using a conventional hacksaw. A high degree of tightness of joints is ensured by the use of asbestos or polyethylene couplings.
